Who
we are. The
Greater Hartford Aikikai (consists of three Japanese words: ai
- harmony, ki - spirit or energy, kai - organization) is a nonprofit
aikido organization founded in 1994 by Michael Sheahon Sensei (chief
instructor), sixth-degree black belt. We teach the martial art
of aikido. Members include men, women and children. We are affiliated
with the U.S. Aikido Federation, Eastern region, based in New York
City, and the Aikikai Foundation (aikido world headquarters) in
Tokyo, Japan.
What
we do.
Aikido (consists of three Japanese words: ai - harmony, ki -
spirit or energy, and do - the path or the way) is a Japanese defensive
martial art founded by Morihei Ueshiba (1883-1969), which focuses
on circular movements to avoid and redirect an assailant's attack.
Aikidoists use the attacker's force to unbalance and neutralize
an assault. Aikido employs various throwing techniques, plus wrist
and elbow locks. Aikido does not emphasize strength. The techniques
rely on the relaxed projection of energy generated by rotating the
hips.
